Processes

In the last three years, Tata Steel has made significant capital investments to improve quality and range of products and our supply chain flexibility.

2005 : 20 million euros was invested to enhance the rolling mill, sampling and inspection facilities and introduce state-of-the-art automated warehousing.

2006 -  2007 : 190 million euros was invested at the Scunthorpe works, the biggest investment in the site for 30 years. This involved three separate projects, two of which were focused on enhancing the capability of the rod mill. This involves a new bloom casting machine to provide direct continuously cast blooms for the rod mill, plus a new bloom reheat furnace and breakdown stands in the rod mill to be able to process this new feedstock and link it to the rest of the existing rod mill process.

These improvements ensure that Tata Steel Wire Rod is produced to the very highest standards, tested thoroughly and then is transported to our customers world-wide in mill condition.

Our culture of continuous improvement means that we constantly monitor and develop not only our processes and equipment but also our working practices. Exercises such as value-stream mapping identify areas for improvement, ensuring that we maximise value for our customers.
